2008 Pacific National Exhibition

The Fourth International Sand Sculpture Competition was a great success at the Pacific National Exhibition with 6 competitors from around the World. Professional sculptor from the United States - Walter McDonald (Amazing Walter), Holland - Edith Van De Wetering, Russia - Ilya Filimontsev, Belgium - Michel De Kok, Canada - Peter Vogelaar, and Joo Heng Tan from Singapore. The Sandemons Sand Sculpture Company was again invited to organize and run the event on behalf of The Pacific National Exhibition along with creating a large display sculpture to open the Fair. The 2008 Display sculpture had replica sculptures created of the 40 year old colliseum with the band Led Zeppelin breaking out of the top and a replica of the 50 year old wooden roller coaster. Andy Briggs, Delayne Corbett, David Dureault and Fredd Dobbs, Professional Sand Sculptors from B.C., Wilfred Stiger from Holland, and Ilya Filimontsev from Russia worked with me to create the Demonstration sculptures and prepare the Competition Site. I would like to give a special thank you to Corrado(Cory) and staff from LaRocca Restaurant for the fabulous Italian dinner and wine for our Annual Party. I would also like to thank the staff of the PNE who treat us very well during the event along with the staff of the Country Kitchen. Other thank you's go to Curry in A Hurry and China Kitchen for the food and to Corporate Touch & Go for all the well needed massages. We look forward to this continuing to be a great event over the upcoming years at the PNE Fair, with a larger group of International Sand Sculptors participating. The input from the PNE Fair staff and visitors has been overwelming and appreciated for this amazing live art form. 1st Place - PETER VOLGELAAR, CANADA 2008 PNE International Sand Sculpture Competition Peter Vogelaar won 1st place at the 4th annual event with a sculpture called 'Mermaid Castle'. The sculpture was one of many Peter has created throughout the year at various competitions and projects. More of Peter's works in sand and snow can be found at Canadian Snow Sculpture website. It will be great to have Peter back for the 2009 PNE event. |

2nd Place - ILYA FILIMONTSEV, RUSSIA 2008 PNE International Sand Sculpture Competition Ilya Filimontsev was the 1st place winner in the 2007 3rd annual event with a sculpture of a Musketeer with Maiden. This years sculpture was called 'The Capture of Helena' and was another beautiful sculpture created by Ilya. Ilya has become a very established sand sculptor over the past years and works with many renowned sand sculptors on projects around the world. Ilya also worked with the Sandemons group on the display sculpture and helped carve the Led Zeppelin sculpture. It was a great pleasure to have Ilay back for the 2008 PNE event. |

3rd Place - WALTER MCDONALD, UNITED STATES 2008 PNE International Sand Sculpture Competition Walter McDonald placed third in this years competition. Walter's sculpture of a traditional sand castle sculpture was a great piece of work for the PNE event. Walter is based out of Texas and is involved with many events and projects throughout the World. EDITH VAN DE WETERING, HOLLAND 2008 PNE International Sand Sculpture Competition Edith created an abstract sculpture of 2 creatures joining together for this years event. Edith works on many sand projects throughout Europe and around the World. |

JOO HENG TAN, SINGAPORE 2008 PNE International Sand Sculpture Competition Joo Heng from Singapore represent Asia in this years event and created a sculpture called 'Butterfly Angel'. Joo Heng travels to many sand sculpture events throughout the World an has won many sand titles. You can see Joo Heng's works at his website Sand Workz. |

MICHEL DE KOK, BELGIUM 2008 PNE International Sand Sculpture Competition Michel from Holland, represented Belgium at this years event and created a great sculpture called 'Pixelated Baby'. The sculpture combined realism and abstract together and was a very original idea. Michel is involved with organizing and working on projects and competitions throughout Europe and the World.
